Being a coastal state Odisha is favoured with vast saline water as well as fresh water resources. It has a very long coast line. There is also a wide network of small and large rivers throughout the state. Most the villages in the state have fish ponds. So fish is produced abundantly in the state and it forms a significant part of the foods in the Odia homes. Besides this, mutton and chicken are also used liberally in Odia food. However it does not mean that all the Odia's prefer non-vegetarian food. A significant number of Odia families are also strictly vegetarian.
